Morphology and Ontogeny of Histiostomatid Mites (Acari: Astigmata) associated with Cattle Dung in the Netherlands Naturalis
Bongers, M.G.H.; Oconnor, B.M.; Lukoschus, F.S..
Collections of histiostomatid mites from cattle dung and/or dung inhabiting insects from various localities in the Netherlands yielded 5 species which were cultured in the laboratory to obtain all ontogenetic stages. Descriptions are given for all stages in the life-cycles of Histiostoma brevimanus and Myianoetus simplex, species previously known only from deutonymphs, and Aphodanoetus teinophallus, gen. nov., spec. nov. A neotype is designated for H. brevimanus. Ontogenetic character transformations are described for two other species, Histiostoma phyllophorum and Rhopalanoetus fimetarius, species in which only deutonymphs and adults were previously described.

Host utilization during ontogeny by two pycnogonid species (Tanystylum duospinum and Ammothea hilgendorfi) parasitic on the hydroid Eucopella everta (Coelenterata: Campanulariidae) Naturalis
Russel, David J.; Hedgpeth, Joel W..
The calyptoblast hydroids Aglaophenia struthionides (Murray, 1860), Eucopella (= Campanularia) everta (Clark, 1896), and Abietinaria spp. in the low intertidal zone at Mussel Point, Pacific Grove, Monterey Bay, California, often bear the adult pycnogonids Tanystylum duospinum Hilton, 1939 and Ammothea hilgendorfi (Böhm, 1879). Larval stages of these pycnogonids were found living and feeding on Eucopella everta. The larvae of Tanystylum duospinum are ectoparasitic. Those of Ammothea hilgendorfi are endoparasitic in the gastrovascular cavities of hydranths. Larvae of both species feed on the gut contents of Eucopella everta, often on the same hydroid colony.

Evolutionary side-steps Naturalis
Sluys, Ronald.
Many of the lower metazoans reach adulthood via complex developmental stages. Each of these stages is described with a specialized terminology, which is different for every major group of organisms. Biologists with a proper training in biodiversity may have learned about these complex issues during their undergraduate days, but many of us do no longer encounter the intricacies of lower metazoan development in later stages of our careers. We may be familiar with the ontogenetic stages in the group on which we specialize, but only a few will have practical knowledge and an overview of the larval stages in such groups as crustaceans, echinoderms, polychaetes, sipunculans, molluscs, flatworms, bryozans, and nemertines. Donald Williamson certainly belongs to...

Estudo comparado do desenvolvimento de dois morfotipos larvais de Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) (Diptera, Calliphoridae) Zoologia
Cunha-e-Silva,Sandra L.; Milward-de-Azevedo,Eliane M.V..
The possible dissimilitudes relating to the duration of the egg incubation period and larval stage of Cochliomyia macellaria (Fab., 1775) from offsprings of females from larvae with and without pigmentation on Malpighi tubules, morphotype 1 and 2, respectively, was questioned. The experiment was conducted in climatized chamber regulated at 30ºC, 65±10% RH and 14 hour photophase. No significant difference was observed on average duration of first and second larval instars berween the two morphotypes, taking into account not only the conventional interpretation for the reading of different development phases of the larval stages (morphotype 1:11.0 and 11.9 hours and morphotype 2:11.7 and 12.7 hours for first and second instars, respectively), but also the...

Corallimorpharia collected during the CANCAP expeditions (1976-1986) in the south-eastern part of the North Atlantic* Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Ocaña, O.; Brito, A..
Species of Corallimorpharia collected during the CANCAP expeditions in the south-eastern part of the North Atlantic are described and discussed, altogether five species belonging to three genera of Corallimorphidae: the shallow water forms Corynactis viridis Allman, 1846, Pseudocorynactis caribbeorum den Hartog, 1980, and P. caboverdensis spec. nov., and the deep-sea forms Corallimorphus cf. atlanticus Carlgren, 1934, and C. ingens Gravier, 1918. The taxonomic status of the representatives of the genus Corynactis Allman, 1846, is discussed. All temperate to subtropical species described so far belong to a group of closely related allopatric taxa forming the Corynactis viridis-complex, possibly representing a single species only. The colours of Corynactis...

A standardized description of European Sminthuridae (Collembola, Symphypleona), 3: description of seven species of Sminthurus, including four new to science Naturalis
Nayrolles, Pierre.
The following three species are redescribed: Sminthurus viridis (Linnaeus, 1758), Sminthurus nigromaculatus Tullberg, 1871, and Sminthurus multipunctatus Schäffer, 1896. Four new species are described from France and Spain: Sminthurus bourgeoisi n. sp., Sminthurus bozoulensis n. sp., Sminthurus leucomelanus n.sp.,and Sminthurus hispanicus n. sp. The importance of the ontogeny of chaetotaxy is stressed. Indeed, not all species acquire the secondary chaetotaxy in the same instar, and for these characters the most informative instar is not the adult but the third juvenile instar. The study of such characters involves the clustering of similar characters. A short discussion is given about this issue (selection of characters and clustering criteria).

Taxonomical and ecological description of a species complex of zooplanktivorous and insectivorous cichlids from Lake Victoria Naturalis
Oijen, M.J.P. van; Witte, F..
The zooplanktivorous Haplochromis tanaos spec. nov., and the morphologically very similar but insectivorous Haplochromis thereuterion spec. nov., from Lake Victoria (East Africa) are described and compared to Haplochromis diplotaenia Regan & Trewavas, 1928, a similar species which is known only from the holotype. Intraspecific variation is described for both new species. Ecological data of the new species are compared to those of known zooplanktivores and insectivores from the Mwanza Gulf area. Both new species disappeared concurrently with the Nile perch (Lates) upsurge early in the 1980's. The recent occurrence of individuals closely resembling the new species, in a different habitat close to the original one, is analysed.

Analysis of a species/instars/characters table: a theoretical survey on the use of chaetotaxy in ontophylogenetic studies Naturalis
Nayrolles, Pierre.
Phylogenetic studies on several groups of arthropods, such as Acari (mites) or Collembola (springtails), make wide use of chaetotaxy. Chaetotaxic characters, besides being morphological features (setal shape), often have a binary nature, that is presence vs. absence. A seta can be variable in a population, and one may attribute a presence probability to this seta. In fact, the presence probability should be defined for each instar. One might think that a variable seta corresponds to a polymorphism (e.g., two or more alleles in a population); in fact, setal variability should be regarded as the result of a propensity intrinsic to individuals, i.e., a potentiality being expressed at random among specimens. The phenomenon known as lateral inhibition explains...

Estrutura e desenvolvimento dos tricomas secretores em folhas de Piper regnellii (Miq.) C. DC. var. regnellii (Piperaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
SILVA,ELAINE MARIA J.; MACHADO,SILVIA RODRIGUES.

Development, structure and distribution of colleters in Mandevilla illustris and M. velutina (Apocynaceae) Rev. Bras. Bot.
APPEZZATO-DA-GLÓRIA,BEATRIZ; ESTELITA,MARIA EMÍLIA MARANHÃO.
Colleters of Mandevilla illustris and M. velutina are present on the cotyledons, shoot apices, mature leaves and on the nodal region, where they are interpetiolar and intrapetiolar. In M. velutina there are two colleters on the adaxial basal part of the leaf blade, and in M. illustris, this number varies. The differentiation of the colleters occurs in the early stages of leaf development. When colleters are mature, they consist of a long head on a short stalk. The central core of the colleter is made up of parenchymatous cells that may exhibit phenolic compounds and is surrounded by radially elongated epithelial cells. The foliar and intrapetiolar colleters can exhibit vascularization. The colleters produce a translucient sticky substance that reacts...

Ontogenetic changes in the fractal geometry of the bronchial tree in Rattus norvegicus Biol. Res.
CANALS,MAURICIO; OLIVARES,RICARDO; LABRA,FABIAN; NOVOA,FRANCISCO F.
Respiration and metabolism change dramatically over the course of the development of vertebrates. In mammals these changes may be ascribed to organogenesis and differentiation of structures involved in gas exchange and transport and the increase in size. Since young as well as mature individuals must be well-designed if the species is to survive, the physiological changes during the development should be matched with geometrical or structural adjustments of the respiratory system. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the fractal geometry of the bronchial tree during the postnatal development of the rat. The average fractal dimension of the bronchial tree of the rats was 1.587, but that of juveniles was larger than that of the adults. We found...

RODRIGUEZ,G. A. D.; SANTOS,J. M. M. dos; MAIA,J. de F..
Changes in the expression of genes were observed during development in populations of Anopheles (Anopheles) intermedius and Anopheles (Anopheles) mattogrossensis. Esterase showed seven zones of activity: EST1 was present in all developmental stages of both species; EST2 was observed only in larvae of A. intermedius and larvae and pupae of A. mattogrossensis, with greater activity in pupae; EST3 and EST5 were present in all developmental stages, with greater intensity in larvae; EST4 and EST6 showed weak activity in larvae of A. mattogrossensis and was not found in A. intermedius. Leucine aminopeptidase showed four zones of activity, of which LAP1 and LAP2 were found in all stages of A. intermedius, with highest activity in larvae, and in larvae only of A....

Salivary cortisol as a tool for physiological studies and diagnostic strategies BJMBR
Castro,M.; Elias,P.C.L.; Martinelli Jr.,C.E.; Antonini,S.R.R.; Santiago,L.; Moreira,A.C..
Salivary cortisol is an index of plasma free cortisol and is obtained by a noninvasive procedure. We have been using salivary cortisol as a tool for physiological and diagnostic studies, among them the emergence of circadian rhythm in preterm and term infants. The salivary cortisol circadian rhythm in term and premature infants was established between 8 and 12 postnatal weeks. In the preterm infants the emergence of circadian rhythm was parallel to the onset of sleep rhythm. We also studied the use of salivary cortisol for screening for Cushing's syndrome (CS) in control and obese outpatients based on circadian rhythm and the overnight 1 mg dexamethasone (DEX) suppression test. Salivary cortisol was suppressed to less than 100 ng/dl after 1 mg DEX in...

Development and some histochemical aspects of foliar glandular trichomes of Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bert. - Asteraceae Rev. Bras. Bot.
MONTEIRO,WALKYRIA ROSSI; CASTRO,MARÍLIA DE MORAES; MAZZONI-VIVEIROS,SOLANGE CRISTINA; MAHLBERG,PAUL GORDON.
The ten-celled biseriate glandular trichome of Stevia rebaudiana (Bert.) Bert.-Asteraceae, found on both leaf surfaces, originates from a single protruding, protodermal cell undergoing an anticlinal division. A subsequent series of periclinal divisions, occurring in acropetal sequence, leads to the formation of the trichome, composed of five pairs of cells, one pair of basal cells, another of stalk cells and three pairs of secretory head cells. Developing, still two-celled glandular trichomes already occur on leaf primordia of the second pair (these primordia measuring, in some cases, ca. 0.30 mm in length), and most of the glandular trichomes are at the mature phase on very young, expanding leaves, for example on those of the sixth pair. The secretory...

Potentiel probiotique de levures productrices des polyamines dans le développement du système digestif du bar Dicentrarchus labrax et de la cabrilla arenera Paralabrax maculatofasciatus ArchiMer
Tovar, Dariel.
The interest in probiotics for aquaculture is increasing rapidly. In the present work we evaluated the potential of some yeast to induce the larvae gut maturation in sea bass larvae Dicentrarchus labrax. The production of polyamines putrescine, spermidine and spermine was quantified in ten yeast strains using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Afterwards, fluorescently labelled yeast adhesion to the intestine of sea bass larvae and the spotted sand bass (Paralabrax maculatofasciatus) was evaluated by fluorescent microscopy. Two of them, CBS 8339 strain (Debaryomyces hansenii) and X2180 strain (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) produce the polyamines of our interest. The same strains showed the best adhering capabilities to the sea bass and spotted sand...

The limitations of ontogenetic data in phylogenetic analyses Naturalis
Koenemann, Stefan; Schram, Frederick R..
The analysis of consecutive ontogenetic stages, or events, introduces a new class of data to phylogenetic systematics that are distinctly different from traditional morphological characters and molecular sequence data. Ontogenetic event sequences are distinguished by varying degrees of both a collective and linear type of dependence and, therefore, violate the criterion of character independence. We applied different methods of phylogenetic reconstruction to ontogenetic data including maximum parsimony and distance (cluster) analyses. Two different data sets were investigated: (1) four simulated ontogenies with defined phylogenies of six hypothetical taxa, and (2) a set of “real” data comprising sequences of 29 ontogenetic events from 11 vertebrate taxa....

Desenvolvimento inicial de larvas de Rhaphiodon vulpinus Agassiz (Characiformes, Cynodontidae) Zoologia
Sousa,Wilson Treger Zydowicz de; Severi,William.
The cynodontid fish Rhaphiodon vulpinus Agassiz, 1829, known as "peixe-cachorro", is the only species of the family oceurring in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. The initial development of its larvae was characterized, based on material collected with a 500 µm mesh size plankton-net, in several biotopes of the Pantanal of Barão de Melgaço, State of Mato Grosso, Central Brazil. The analysis was carried out with 72 larvae with standard length (SL) between 4.7 and 13.8 mm. The morphometric measurements varied positively with standard length, and body proportions ranged 8.1-17.8% for head length (HL), 6.2-10.1% for body height, and 63.673.5%, 16.8-21.6%, and 61.8-78.2% SL, respectively for pre-dorsal, pre-pectoral and pre-anal distances. On the classification of Corallimorphus (Anthozoa: Corallimorpharia): the ratio of discal and marginal tentacles Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Grebelnyi, S.D..
Since the study of the genus Corallimorphus was started, the main taxonomic character used to separate species has been the ratio of the number of marginal tentacles to that of the discal ones. Polyps with a marginal:discal (m:d) tentacle ratio of 2:1 and 4:1 collected by the “Challenger” expedition were described as two distinct species, Corallimorphus rigidus and Corallimorphus profundus respectively (Moseley, 1877a, 1877b; Hertwig, 1882, 1888). This feature remained important in the taxonomy of the genus. For example, Fautin et al. (2002) subdivided the genus Corallimorphus into two groups of species: Corallimorphus rigidus, C. ingens, C. atlanticus, C. denhartogi (ratio of marginal: discal tentacles 2:1) were referred to the «rigidus» group.
